Nekresi Monastery

Nekresi monastery located on a hill, overlooking the beautiful valley of the Alazani Kakheti.

During its long history, the monastery has survived many upheavals, robbers and bandits raids destroyed everything in its path. This is evidenced by the remains of the city at the foot of the mountain. The monastery itself hardly affected, preserved beautiful buildings built at different times. Here is the oldest church in the region, dating back to the 4th century, and is one of the oldest Christian buildings.

The monastery survived "Marani" which means wine storage. This room, with imbedded in the floor huge jug of wine "kvevri", was renovated in 2008 and submitted for review.

There is a legend about how the monks saved the monastery. During the raids of Muslims to the temple drove a lot of pigs, thereby causing disgust of robbers. Therefore Nekresi temple is the only country where the sacrificial animal - pig.

In order to see the monastery Nekresi need to go on the road, steep rises. But there is an alternative - taxi, which is quite inexpensive. Other cars travel to the monastery is prohibited.

Nekresi ancient temples are located on a picturesque hill, where your eyes will be opened the breathtaking scenery of the Alazani Valley.
